In NSW, more than 500,000 people - almost 14 per cent of the workforce - are employed in transport and logistics. Freight volumes are expected to double in the next twenty years and the demand for skilled transport and logistics workers is increasing, as our population and freight volumes grow.
Fifteen year 10 students from Strathfield South were selected to be a part of the Green Light Day Initiative, where they were able to get a first-hand look at some of the roles and potential job opportunities around logistics managers, freight loaders, forklift operators, and train/truck drivers.
Students received practical career advice from employees currently working within the industry and were able to discuss career pathways with representatives from TAFE NSW. Students were invited to attend the Transport for NSW training facility in Petersham for an onsite visit. Here students spent the day learning about the specific roles and responsibilities within the company as well as participating in a range of interactive train simulation activities where students were able to carry out the duties of a train driver.
