Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Symphonia Jubilate

The past 2 years in Symphonia Jubilate have been extraordinary as I have experienced the true meaning of music. From the beginning until now, I am more confident than ever to express my emotions towards music. Just recently I arrived back from my regional tour from Dubbo, Orange and Warren, teaching and playing with primary and high school students who have never experienced an orchestra before. I think it was a truly blissful and amazing experience for me. I also encouraged people to take part in music as it unlocks a new part of their brain which they probably have not seen before. – Mohammed Ali Hammoud

My time in Symphonia Jubilate over the past year has been amazing. I have been growing and improving a lot and I also have been learning new things and gaining new skills by being responsible as a concert master. I am very glad that my leadership skills and sight-reading skills have been incredibly improved. The Regional tour which I have recently come back from was truly amazing. I would like to thank the schools we had been to and all the teachers who had organised and planned everything for the tour. It was such great time as I met many new friends, practiced and performed with them every day. I would never have been able to have all these magnificent experiences if I missed the tour. I really look forward to continuing to work with Simphonia Jubilate. – Arum Jeon

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Harmony Day

One of the things I love to celebrate most about our school and community is its diversity, and each day we pay respect to the more than 60 different cultures, beliefs and practices that make up the rich tapestry of our school.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for all of society, as the recent tragic events in Christchurch, proliferation of hate speech, and ongoing discrimination across the world against different racial and cultural minorities, clearly shows.

Ignorance, prejudice and extreme acts of violence are not restricted to any particular group in society except for those who, regardless of cultural background or political beliefs, forget that we are all human.

In my leadership of this school I have always strived to help our students understand that the things in life that join us together are far stronger than those that make us different, and that the differences that do exist should never be a cause for discrimination, but rather should serve as opportunities for learning and understanding.

Multiculturalism and respect for diversity will always be at the heart of this school – because the community that is the heart of this school deserves nothing less.

Thursday 21st March is Harmony Day – let’s continue to work together to promote understanding and respect, and celebrate our diversity together.

Random acts of hatred can never be allowed to overshadow collective peace and harmony.

Senior Hospitality students open and setup the kitchens in preperation for the morning rush, they prepare several hot food options for offer and take care of cleaning up at the end of their morning shift. Hospitality students gain valuable experience doing jobs like this around the school and even catering for our large events such as Graduation, family fair day, etc.

It is with the assistance of teachers volunteering their time to supervise in the mornings and Hospitality students preparing food that great programs like this are able to run for our students.

As part of a depth study, year 11 and 12 students studying Biology travelled to the Narrabeen rock platform in the Northern Beaches. They studied the ecosystem in a variety of ways including doing surveys and quadrat sampling, and collected data on the algae, animals and environmental factors.

For some students, it was their first time seeing a rock platform and they were quite enthralled.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

The Galmatic Program is aimed at giving young women an interactive and educational experience with reference to servicing an automobile. The workshop is a fun way to provide students with necessary skills for the following:

- What is under your hood and what do you need to know to be safe on the road

- Where and how to change and monitor your cars oil

- What is coolant and how do you know there is enough in your radiator

- What is a jack, where is your spare tyre and how do you change a tyre

- Who do you call if your car breaks down or if you need a mobile tyre change

The program had 15 successful participants who can now say they have the confidence and ability to be in control of their car and their safety when on the road. Well done girls.

Year 10 Careers in Transport & Logistics Program

In NSW, more than 500,000 people - almost 14 per cent of the workforce - are employed in transport and logistics. Freight volumes are expected to double in the next twenty years and the demand for skilled transport and logistics workers is increasing, as our population and freight volumes grow.

Fifteen year 10 students from Strathfield South were selected to be a part of the Green Light Day Initiative, where they were able to get a first-hand look at some of the roles and potential job opportunities around logistics managers, freight loaders, forklift operators, and train/truck drivers.

Students received practical career advice from employees currently working within the industry and were able to discuss career pathways with representatives from TAFE NSW. Students were invited to attend the Transport for NSW training facility in Petersham for an onsite visit. Here students spent the day learning about the specific roles and responsibilities within the company as well as participating in a range of interactive train simulation activities where students were able to carry out the duties of a train driver.

Symphonia Jubilate - Student symphony orchestra involvement

Symphonia Jubilate is a symphony orchestra made up of students predominantly from primary and secondary schools in the Strathfield education area. Founded in 2013 by Tracy Burjan and Luke Wallace, the orchestra aims to provide students with an opportunity to rehearse learn and perform quality orchestral music from a diverse range of musical styles, as well as to foster a new level of music appreciation and skill. 5 of our students (Mohammed Ali Hammoud in Yr 11, Nicholas Kong in Yr 11, Danielle Vang in Yr 11, Arum Jeon in Yr 9, Felice Felice in Yr 9) at Strathfield South High School have been taking parts of the Symphonia Jubilate and making a great commitment and contribution by going out to rehearsals on a regular basis.

There are three types of orchestra in Symphonia Jubilate and SJ Primo is the one that our students have been taking parts of. SJ Primo is made up of high school students from the Strathfield/Burwood areas and other schools in the Ultimo district. The orchestra have noticed huge leaps of improvement in the sight-reading and musicality of the students since 6 years ago when it was set up.

On 24th November 2018, SJ Primo presented a wonderful performance at Marie Bashir Public School. They performed Symphony no 5 1st movement by Beethoven, Milenium by Richard Meyer and La, La, La … Lieto! By Tracy Burjan.

The performance was a great success and we would like to congratulate all our students who performed beautiful music as part of the SJ Primo on the day.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Tuesday 24th July, a group of ten girls from year 7 and 8 attended the Stephen Cognillio Cup at the GWS Giants Head Quarters in Homebush. It was a day to launch the Giants multi-cultural week and consisted of a round-robin style tournament. Our girls had never played AFL before and were slightly nervous to begin with.

However, the nerves settled and they won their 􀏐irst game against Kingsgrove North. Next up was Bankstown and it took 3 late goals from the girls to snatch a victory several seconds before time. This advanced us to the Grand Final against Merrylands High School. Again we kicked several late goals but fell short by 1 point. It was an amazing effort from a group of girls who had never played AFL together and they thoroughly enjoyed the day. Well done!

Our annual Family Fair Day event, a celebration of the wonderfully diverse community that we are lucky enough to have at Strathfield South High School. This day was the result of months of planning and work to provide our students, their families and staff an exciting and fun day filled with games, cultural displays, activities and of course food.

Staff, students and parents generously provided food from their culture that was enjoyed by all. Our amazing students prepared the remaing food and served lunch to the many family and community members who built up an appetite on the games and activities set up on the oval. We would like to extend our gratitiude to families who were able to join us for our cellebration. It was an amazing day and ran flawlessy with a massive thanks to Ms Cotsis and Ms Cotis who managed the day and to all staff and students who ran stalls, activities and ensured the day was a success.

On the day they all performed to perfection and achieved a rank of 34 out of 100 teams, which was a fantastic result considering they were competing against many prestigious selective and private schools.

The results were based on each team's performance rather than individual student's results. Analysis of the overall results showed that two of our students Tommy Tran and Adam Huynh had achieved scores in the top 10, which was an incredible achievement.

Strathfield South High School Anzac Day assembly 2017

Captains Jenan Hannaway and Danny Hinh gave the following speech during our Anzac Day ceremony.

"Good morning, distinguished guests, teachers and students. We meet today not to celebrate or glorify war, but rather to remember those who have served our country during conflict and crisis. We also remember those who served and worked tirelessly on the home front, providing the support and moral strength for those who fought and died for our country.

"On this occasion we revisit the reasons why we commemorate Anzac Day and exactly what it means to us as a nation and as individuals. On Anzac Day, we salute not only the spirit of the Anzac's but, in paying tribute to them, we take the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to uphold the values for our country as they did and uphold the qualities of courage, commitment, endurance and mateship.

"Australia has been involved in several armed conflicts since their role in World War 1 at Gallipoli. In 1939, almost a million men and women volunteered to participate in World War II and over 40 000 did not return. A few years later, Australia sent 17,000 soldiers to Korea, and in the 1960s sent 50, 0000 to Vietnam.

"Having said this, Australian soldiers have been active in peacekeeping operations in East Timor, the Solomon Islands and throughout the Middle East helping the people of these countries to get their lives back on track. These soldiers risk their lives in these war-torn countries, demonstrating the same self-sacrifice, integrity and compassion that the Anzac's showed at Gallipoli.

"Anzac Day is not merely a date, or some remote campaign, but rather a spirit. It is a time to reflect on the qualities of past generations of Australians who in hardship displayed courage, discipline, self -sacrifice, self-reliance, resourcefulness and friendship. Even as the numbers of Anzac's grow smaller, the Anzac spirit which was handed down to us from battlefields long ago, will live on because it is a reflection of the very heart of our nation. Our men and women of the Australian defence forces serve in Australia and overseas carrying on the spirit and legacy of the Anzac's.

"Anzac Day is therefore a day for all Australians, regardless of religion, racial background or place of birth. It is a day to commemorate the bravery and self -sacrifice of past and present generations. It is a day to acknowledge the selflessness of all those who laid down their lives for Australia so that it can be a place of freedom for all. On this day we thank and recognise those who served our country, today we honour the people of Australia who have fought in wars to protect our country and have risked their lives. Therefore honour the Anzac spirit and incorporate its values of purpose, direction, acceptance, responsibility and compassion as part everyday life in Australia."

On Tuesday afternoons our students have swapped their sport time for the opportunity to help the community by beautifying a local section of fence along the highway.

To achieve this brightly coloured underwater mural the students worked collaboratively with local residents, Strathfield Council and Sydney Water.

They were also supported in their efforts by university student volunteers as they painted the ‘Water Is Life' themed mural. Their mural has transformed what was once a graffiti ridden section of fencing into a bright, clean, and vibrant visual space.

Students used specialised equipment to measure abiotic factors and measured populations of crabs and various native plants.

The students took particular interest in tasting a salt excreting leaf!

The school swimming carnival this year was a great success.

The carnival was held at Enfield Aquatic centre with all students attending in their respective house colour and participated in each event to the best of their ability.

Several new events were included this year allowing students the ability to partake in swimming events they would usually not have the ability to. The 25m races included this year was an event all students really enjoyed and thrived on. The Unicorn and Banana races were also a great event that students had lots of fun with.

Both swimmers and non-swimmers applied themselves and all students were extremely well behaved demonstrating a great level of respect.

As always the schools PDHPE (personal development, health and physical education) department has gone above and beyond planning an amazing day for the students to have fun and show off their talents.

As part of Strathfield South High School's enrichment program, students studying visual arts were given the opportunity to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) on George Street in The Rocks.

Over two days the students observed and learnt from two very different exhibitions, 'Today Tomorrow Yesterday' and

'Primavera 2016'.

Whilst at The Museum of Contemporary Art our Strathfield South High School students immersed themselves in the exhibits and also took the opportunity to create artworks of their own in the research rooms of the gallery.

Our students produced impressive animated and performance style works.

Our visual arts students loved the experience and appreciated that Mrs Maciel and Mrs Lodge organised these worthwhile and immersive days for them.

HSC drama weekend excursion

On Saturday 4 February, our drama students accompanied Ms Cotsis and Ms Cotis to the Seymour Centre, near The University of Sydney, to watch 'On Stage'.

This production is the exciting culmination of the best works by HSC (Higher School Certificate) drama students.

At this event our Strathfield South High School drama students were fortunate to experience the exemplary performances by individual and group 2016 HSC drama students.

Our students also had time to view the production, costume, and lighting design submissions that were created by 2016 HSC drama students from across the state.

This excursion offered our students the opportunity to see what is expected of them, and what is possible, in the HSC drama course.

They saw exemplar performances of group and individual works and were able to gain ideas for their own projects. Every student who attended expressed their gratitude to Ms Cotis for organising the excursion and for giving up her own private time to support our students in achieving their very best in their studies of drama at Strathfield South High School.

In January, during the school holidays, 14 students attended the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) for two weeks.

For these two weeks the students had the opportunity to enrol in a course of their choice.

Over this fortnight, depending on which elective they chose to study, they attended lectures, tutorials, workshops, and sporting activities in engineering, design, journalism, media, nursing, and science.

At the end of the course there was an exhibition of our students' work and there was also a graduation ceremony in the Grand Hall.

The overall experience of UTS summer school gave our students a taste of what it is like to attend university, from studying though to graduating.

This involved students travelling to Sydney Olympic Park by train and experiencing a day full of exciting and memorable activities including meeting drivers for autographs, walking through the backstage pit areas as well as car shows and lots of interactive displays.

The students enjoyed the day with their highlights being watching the race cars drive around the track, sitting in the driver's seat of a police car and browsing the wide range of cars in the car show pavilion.
